Press Release Patricia Caicedo US Tour - Fall 2007

Soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo:  dedicated to the preservation and International promotion of the Latin American Art Song genre

The Barcelona Festival of Song 2008 is presented with a tour of concerts and lectures in the U.S.

(New York, New York, November 5, 2007) – Positioned as “The Voice of the Latin American Art Song” and often described as its ambassador, Colombian soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo will launch the 2008 Barcelona Festival of Song with a tour of concerts in the U.S.  The first stop of her tour will be in New York, where she will be performing Latin American & Spanish Art Songs from the 19th and 20th centuries at a private showcase. Her tour of concerts and lectures will bring her to the ARTE Festival in Tampa, Florida, University of South Florida, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and to Queen College and Brooklyn College in New York.

Ms. Caicedo is an authority on the Latin American Art Song genre, having published its first critical anthology, investigated and compiled a library of over 2,500 art songs from 18 Latin American countries, as well as recorded several CDs.  The Journal of Singing recently commented on Ms. Caicedo´s pioneering book, The Latin American Art Song:  A Critical Anthology and Interpretive Guide for Singers: “Colombian soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo has done both her own region and the rest of the world a great favor in researching, compiling, writing commentary for, and editing forty-eight songs by twenty-one composers representing ten countries.” Caicedo is frequently invited to universities in the United States to give concerts, master classes and lectures about this important art form.

The purpose of Ms. Caicedo’s new tour is two-fold: to promote the Barcelona Festival of Song and to introduce greater audiences to the Latin American Art Song repertoire; including the growing Hispanic population in U.S. Caicedo’s intent is to cultivate familiarity with this type of art music across nationalities and ethnicities. “I am truly excited to be back in the United States, and to be able to interpret an art form I am extremely passionate about for such a large and diverse group,” commented Ms. Caicedo, who is an advocate with a clear mission of promoting this genre and preserving the musical heritage of Latin America and Spain .

The Barcelona Festival of Song, a summer program now in its fourth year, was created by Ms. Caicedo to provide an opportunity for classical singers, pianists, guitarists and musicologists who are interested in expanding their musical horizons to explore Latin American and Spanish Vocal Music and; at the same time, enjoy the energy, creativity and vitality of Barcelona, Spain.

The festival has attracted students and faculty members from important U.S. and European universities since 2005.  Participants of this program receive a total immersion course where they attend master classes and lectures, as well as perform in public concerts.  “Given the increasing number of Hispanic students in our schools, there is a great need for song literature in Spanish" states Dr. Judith Carman, music reviewer for the NATS Journal of Singing.

According to Ms. Caicedo, the Latin American Art Song repertory was written from the end of the 19th century to the early part of the 20th century.  The origins of the repertoire can be traced back to 19th century Germany, where well-known composers, such as Schubert and Schumann, were writing Lieder (literally songs) for voice and piano.  Latin American composers quickly began following the Lieder model, though in a unique socio-cultural context being shaped by nationalist social trends, at a period of fertile musical renaissance in the Americas.

The European model influenced composers experimenting with the Lieder style; however, the results clearly had a Latin American language and flavor.  Composers such as Heitor Villa-lobos (Brazil), Jaime León (Colombia-USA), Alberto Ginastera (Argentina), Carlos Guastavino (Argentina), Silvestre Revueltas (Mexico) and Theodoro Valcárcel (Peru), among many others, brought the genre to new heights.

Those who attend Ms. Caicedo’s performances will travel to different countries and cultures and will enjoy listening to a truly unique, fascinating, and enriching art form, witnessing the revival of an important part of the musical heritage of Latinos as well as witnessing an individual who is determined to let the world know about, and respect this beautiful art form – Latin American Art Song.
